I recently found what I believe is an Altec 605 cabinet with a 604 speaker in it. This was in the attic of the home we recently purchased and looks as though it
is a vintage collectors item. How lucky for me! This thing is heavy....160lbs????? How it got into the attic I will never know, but it's still there. Can anyone help me
with pricing on this bad boy. It does work and I'd love to keep it. I kinda like the design but the wife.....you know. I've seen pricing anywhere upwards to 10k for one of
these puppies. Is that true? Help me out if you can. See the photos below.
Yes it is a 605 cabinet with probably a very early 604.Yes it is worth a lot of dough but not in the $10K range IMO.Probably closer to half that,still a lot of dough.What would concern me is the storage up in the attic, if it is anything like mine.It gets very hot up there. So my first concern would be dry rot of the cone,especially if it is still the original cone.
BTW - Welcome to the Board ! I think you would find this thread interesting.
Only a fool would shed a true treasure like that. Put it in your mancave if the WAF is too high. If the cone is hit you can still get it reconed to pretty close to the original specs, If you use the 515 cones with the paper surrounds . There's a guy on ebay that sells them.

Does anyone know the tonal qualities of these cones, are they up to original quality of the original 20409 cones ?
All I know is there was a 604C on ebay that he claimed had just been reconed, when I looked at it it had the paper surround so I asked him where did he find the cones at and he explained to me that they're the same cone he sells as the 515 he just doesn't advertise them as 604 cones because apparently he was bombarded by people telling him that the 604 cones had the accordion style surround and that he was misleading people with his advertising.
